Markus Muurman
I am an attorney-at-law specializing in court proceedings and arbitrations. I have over a decade of experience in successfully representing clients in legal disputes and criminal cases. During my career, I have assisted clients in a wide range of matters relating to various fields of law and industries. My assignments have included several particularly demanding and high-value legal proceedings, but also many smaller and simpler cases.
In addition to court proceedings and arbitrations, I have plenty of experience in general legal advice. In particular, I have advised clients on issues concerning contract law and law of obligations (such as contract interpretation, impediments to performance, damages, and limitation of debts) and assisted in drafting contracts.
As a dispute resolution specialist, I regularly assist clients from the early stages of legal disputes. This gives me a good understanding of the best practices for identifying the client's legal position and risks, preparing for the possibility of legal proceedings and seeking an amicable solution where it is in the client's best interests.
In addition to my work as counsel, I act as arbitrator. I have acted as an arbitrator both in institutional and ad hoc arbitrations.
I offer my services in Finnish and English. I also speak Swedish and Russian at a level sufficient for everyday communication.
Experience as counsel
The following examples of cases I have handled illustrate my experience
1.
I assisted major international corporations in antitrust damages actions in both litigation and arbitration, with the claims in these cases amounting to hundreds of millions of euros.
2.
I acted as counsel for a U.S.-listed technology company in an arbitration concerning a dispute worth tens of millions of euros over alleged defects in the client’s products.
3.
I represented a foreign state in a large-scale trial for aggravated fraud and aggravated money laundering, involving interests worth several million euros.
4.
I acted as counsel for a shopping center in a trial that pertained to, i.a. the cancellation of a commercial lease agreement and the adjustment of rent based on the COVID-19 pandemic.
5.
I represented a property technology company before the Finnish Market Court in a damages claim based on unfair commercial practices.
6.
I acted as counsel for a Finnish-listed company in an arbitration against its former executive concerning a dispute over a breach of a non-recruitment clause.
7.
I advised a wholesaler on a comprehensive update of their delivery terms and contractual practices.
8.
I assisted a bank in a litigation pertaining to a dispute over changes to the interest rates charged by the bank.
9.
I acted as counsel for Finnish investors in an arbitration involving a multi-million euro dispute over the sale and purchase of shares in a technology company.
10.
I represented a banking company in an arbitration against an institutional investor relating to an investment agreement of considerable value.
11.
I assisted representatives of a media company in cases relating to aggravated defamation and dissemination of information violating personal privacy.
12.
I represented an asset management company in a litigation concerning the termination of a commercial lease — the issues adjudicated in the case included, among others, whether the company was entitled to terminate the lease because it intended to develop the real estate.
